Student accommodation

3,517 rooms in 65 residence-hall buildings across four areas of the Tsukuba Campus — Ichinoya, Hirasuna, Oikoshi and Kasuga. Tsukuba states these are the largest student residence halls of any national university in Japan.
¥15,380 a month for a standard single room of about 10 m² at Ichinoya, Hirasuna or Oikoshi — ¥19,410 renovated. A ¥30,000 deposit on moving in; utilities are metered and billed on top.
¥35,800 a month in Global Village — 500 rooms in share-house units of five, each with a private room and a shared kitchen and living room. Deliberately mixed Japanese and international: 212 and 192 residents on 1 October 2025.
¥23,711 a month in Kasuga Residence Hall Building 3, which Tsukuba calls the Kasuga International Student Building — 18 m² singles with their own bath and cooking facilities, plus four couple and family rooms.
¥33,826 a month for a family room at Ichinoya. There are 120 of them and 52 were occupied by international students on 1 October 2025. Non-degree research, exchange and auditing students may not apply for one.
A residence-fee rise announced for 1 April 2026 was postponed on 26 March 2026 to a date the university has not yet set. The rents above are the ones still being charged.
¥30,000-50,000 a month for a private flat in Tsukuba city with kitchen, bath and toilet — plus deposit and key money of one to two months each, agency commission, fire insurance and a guarantor.
A little over 40% of new entrants move into a hall. There is no published application calendar: you apply inside the web enrolment procedure after passing the entrance examination, and a lottery is run if applications exceed places.
