About University

The college was founded in 1887 and named after poet John Greenaliff Whittier, who was one of the founders of the city of Whittier. Whittier College has a strong tradition of social responsibility. In 1935, the college became one of the first in the United States to institute mandatory service programs requiring students to perform a certain number of hours of community service. Whittier College teams compete under the name "Poets." The college provides students with the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports, such as football, basketball, swimming, and others. Whittier College actively supports cultural and educational events on campus.
