Student accommodation

327 rooms across seven halls, of which 302 are open to applicants — against 1,340 international students. Kobe states plainly that there are too few places to go round.
¥10,700 a month at Sumiyoshi International Student House, the cheapest hall, 40-50 minutes from Rokkodai. ¥23,000 at Kokui Residence, which is the closest at about 30 minutes on foot.
¥28,800 a month for a 13 m² single at Kobe University International Residence on Port Island, ¥31,800 for the larger 16.6 m² type, and ¥59,900 to ¥65,300 for couple and family flats.
¥23,000 a month at Sumiyoshi Residence, which is MEN ONLY, and ¥24,000 at Joshi Ryo, which is WOMEN ONLY — Kobe withholds Joshi Ryo's address for security.
The two Fukae halls are CLOSED to new applicants — International House Fukae (married couples and families only, ¥21,500-23,900) and Hakuo Dormitory (¥17,900). Do not apply to either.
Halls are advertised in January and July, on a vacancy basis only, and you apply through your own faculty office — never centrally. Each faculty sets its own deadline. The October 2026 round has closed; the next is January 2027.
Kobe publishes no figure at all for private rent in the city, in any year. It states only that deposit and key money run to two or three months' rent, and that agent commission is capped by law at one month.
Every rent below is the REAL monthly total. Kobe advertises a lodging fee, then adds a monthly common charge of ¥5,000 to ¥16,300 — on the cheapest hall that nearly triples it. Utilities are billed at cost on top.
